It's hard to believe that people would actually go without needed coverage
that costs as little as twenty-five cents a day. In most cases, taking out
renter's insurance will actually provide you with savings on your auto
insurance if the two policies are with the same company. The renter's policy
not only covers your personal property at your residence, but also away from
home, in your car, at work, at college, or even on vacation, as long as you
are within the coverage territory (which is usually the United States, its
territories or possessions, and Canada). Coverage away from your residence is
limited to a percentage of the amount you carry for contents coverage.
Suppose you have a party, and one of your guests is injured on your
premises by slipping on a rug you have placed on a slippery, waxed floor.
Three weeks later, you receive papers in the mail announcing you are being
sued. The cost only starts when you have to contact an attorney. If you had a
renter's policy, that first call would be to your insurance agent. You would
be defended even if the accusation is groundless. If you are negligent and
responsible in some way for your guest's injury, your liability coverage in
your renter's policy would provide coverage.
Suppose your neighbor, deciding the taste of a grilled burger is just the
thing (even though it's the dead of winter), cranks up his grill in his
kitchen. Need we say more? When the fire department gets done putting out the
two-alarm fire that ensues, whom will you call - your insurance agent or your
mother?
When we see a local news report about a family that has had a loss and
must rely on the kindness of friends and neighbors for clothes, food, and
lodging, it amazes us. Don't get us wrong, we think that kind of helping hand
is great, but wouldn't it be much more responsible to secure your own future?
For as little as the cost of a pack of gum a day, you can do just that.
